Event Recap: Let's Talk Sex, Madrid
On November 3rd Gabs Away held its first event in Madrid!
After having such a wonderful evening with Let’s Talk Sex, Barcelona I received amazing responses from people from various places and requests to host in other cities. Madrid has been a home to me since I was a child so it only seemed natural to bring Gabs Away to one of my favorite cities. This event was also an opportunity to approach the topic of sex and sexuality from another perspective
–
How much do our ethnicities and backgrounds affect our experiences and attitudes about sex?
We were warmly welcomed to El Salón del Artista to enjoy an evening of great conversation, delightful dinner and a spectacular performance afterwards by the very talented Erin Corine, accompanied by Yoel Molina on guitar.
Corey Chancellor of Tapas Translated created a unique menu inspired by the famous tapas Madrileñas which included Tex-Mex tortilla, Escalivada, a fantastic Almond Turron cake and more!
After brief introductions we quickly dove into the topic. We discussed how the heteronormative and arguably archaic concept of virginity had affected how we saw sex. Some guests shared how their strict religious upbringing negatively affected their sexual experiences growing up, which made me think about how religion and sexuality can coexist in a healthy way. It was surprising how many guests had similar experiences despite their very different backgrounds.
We discussed how the hypersexualixation of women of color, especially Black and/or Latina women resulted in struggling to feel self autonomy and control over our sexuality. This can be even more pronounced for people of color in predominantly white spaces in which we can be subjected to fetishisation and racism. Many of us continue to work at unlearning unhealthy views of ourselves and it was inspiring to see so many have grown into confident young people.
Of course, we can’t talk about the issues of sex without mentioning how LGBTQ folk have unique obstacles, as there is limited amount of information regarding queer sex. I shared my own experience growing up bisexual and the negative implications of having an incomplete sexual education. I loved hearing how open everyone was to talking about their own struggles as well as their progress.
While the topic can sometimes stir some complicated feelings within us or unpleasant past experiences I was so inspired by the personal growth and enlightening journeys the attendees seem to be embarking on. It also confirmed to me the importance of having honest and open discussions about sex, and how an inclusive sex education from a young age is imperative for a healthy sex life. I truly believe it can help empower everyone, especially those who might be most at risk of sexual exploitation, whether it’s physical or emotional, everyone should feel comfortable when it comes to sex.
What an incredible and educational experience!
We wrapped up the evening with a toast and a beautiful musical performance by Erin Corine and Yoel Molina!
