Event Recap: Food with Benefits

Why is food a personal failure for some and a passion for others?

My first official Gabs Away dinner was a very special experience where we got to share food rituals that we had grown up with, how our body insecurities influenced our relationship with food, and much more!

A variety of cultures got together on a beautiful private rooftop to share a delicious vegan menu prepared by nutritionist Chelsey Labusch from My Best Fit Plan.  The menu included savoury veggie burgers, vegan kimchi, sweet potato brownies and more!

Some guests shared stories about cooking with their grandmothers and the importance of continuing culinary traditions with the future families. I was lucky to have my father attend, whose family was exiled from Spain under Franco, who kindly shared how his family would celebrate every New Year’s Eve with a dinner and cheering with the hopes of one day being able to return to Spain. It was a beautiful moment and a story I had not heard before making it that much more special.

This dinner taught me that no matter where any of us come from food can bring anyone together, families, friends, and strangers alike. Being able to hear not just the different food rituals but also the similarities so many of us share was as informative as it was fun!

I would like to thank every single guest who attended Gabs Away first official dinner. It would not have been possible without all your support! I would also like to thank you my great friend Chelsey from My Best Fit Plan for preparing such an incredible menu for everyone!
